Tiede & edistys is a Finnish multi-disciplinary critical journal founded in 1977 by Tutkijaliitto ry, the Finnish association of researcher. The publication deals in particular with social sciences and philosophy, but also covers history, literary studies, aesthetics, religion, science, and environmental sciences. It aims at the highest level for each discipline on key issues. Four issues are released each year.

We were commissioned to completely re-design the journal's visual identity, logo and to produce a new template for the whole layout. Hand in hand with the publication's board and its requirements we elaborated a modern appearance build upon a very bold and streamlined structure embellished by a small set of eccentric graphical details.

While it is a periodic publication, the journal's visual aspect evokes the feeling of a book with its rather thick and shinny cover and its serif typeface in the body text. The goal was to balance the timely minimalism of the layout with visual references to the classical idea of a book. We carefully crafted the cover's layout with the logo highlighted on a white surface like a small graphic composition displayed on its very own frame. The only color element on the cover is also isolated in its own space instead of being an overlapped background for consolidated visual results.

A new web site dedicated to the journal is in development so watch this space!
